The Convenience Of Journalistic Ethics

Fox News is running a discussion panel this morning and one of the topics is the LA Times’ refusal to release the tape of Obama praising Rashid Khalidi at a going away party for Khalidi.

Khalidi was a former speaker for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Even more embarrassing for Obama is that the party appears to have been attended to by Bill Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn, both long time far left radicals.

The argument is over whether the LA Times should release the tape, if their refusal is to protect Obama, and if the same standard would be applied if it were a tape damaging to John McCain.

The discussion itself largely fell along ideological lines among the panel in patterns that one would expect.

What’s interesting though is that Julia Baird, Editor for Newsweek, led off the conversation with the media’s ace, journalistic ethics, as an excuse not to release it.

This is an argument that is beyond ridiculous in this campaign. Most of the media shred any remaining semblance of ethics in approximately April or May. Further, Ms Baird’s Newsweek was right there with the worst of the publications as far as journalistic ethics are concerned.

So, excuse me if I’m a little skeptical of this claim to ethics.

Yes I covered this a bit a few days ago. What is happening right now is appalling. No matter who wins this election, the media, if they are capable, should feel total shame in how they have behaved. If Obama wins expect it to only get worse, they have promoted him so much they now have a vested interest in his success.

Our press has become a partisan surrogate of liberal, pro-socialist ideology. Obama has demonstrated an uncanny understanding of how to use the press to facilitate his agenda. We therefore must conclude that Obama is much smarter than media moguls, and that for their part, the media will be content with spreading his word in exchange for vast sums of revenues. A. J. Liebling reminded us, “The function of the press in society is to inform, but its role in society is to make money.” Still, there can be no greater nor startling revelation than from Obama’s philosophical great-grand father, Vladimir Lenin: “The press should not only be a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses.”

So far, the plan seems to be working; the question of ethics is indeed moot.

Ethics and Journalism are basically incompatible ideas. We only protect journalism because we believe in the free flow of ideas, especially political, and we are against controlling thinking. Ethics in journalism are only used where the journalist organization sees profitability or some other gain. That's why MSM moguls are making conscious decisions to report in a biased fashion... what do they have to lose? They are still powerful advertising media, which means they will still keep the money flowing in. Fox, on the other hand, has to slant differently than its counterparts, because it is basing its existence on a sector of the population that cries out for something more centrist, even right-leaning.

The LA Times is not gonna release the tape unless it determines that to hold on to it will cost them big bucks. If that were to happen, I guarantee you their "ethical concerns" would fly out the window in a heartbeat.

I’m a little skeptical of it as well.

Nancy, I wrote a blog a month or two ago that the real loser of this election will be the media, they're numbers are tanking.

The problem with their plan though Mustang is that they're not making money. Their circulation is down so their ad revenue is down so their stock is down.

Practicalist, I agree, the media is a business and I'm ok with it. I just want them to stop hiding behind ethics when a) it's convenient, and b) they have none.

My Files, thanks for visiting. Agreed. I like your site. I added you to my blog roll.

liberal thinking

Love this one Shoprat.

In a way though, unless the video has more incriminating evidence, it seems pointless now. The important question really should be what's what King Barack and all these terrorists, commies and haters he seems to be hanging around with.

"...the real loser of this election will be the media, they're numbers are tanking."

I hope so Chuck because that's long overdue.

We all know that if this shoe were on the other foot, the whole thing would have been out there faster than a heartbeat.
But the Press has obviously long since abandoned any semblance of decency or even simple professionalism. This will come back to bite them in the butt. Their newsprint empires are on the verge of collapse. Even the left will eventually stop buying one-party propaganda eventually. Too boring.
