Be Kind To Muslims Day

Hawaii Lawmakers Pass Bill to Create 'Islam Day'

HONOLULU -- Hawaii's state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate "Islam Day" -- over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

The Senate's two Republicans argued that a minority of Islamic extremists have killed many innocents in terrorist attacks.

"I recall radical Islamists around the world cheering the horrors of 9/11. That is the day all civilized people of all religions should remember," said Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings to the applause of more than 100 people gathered in the Senate to oppose a separate issue -- same-sex civil unions.

The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House and now goes to Republican Gov. Linda Lingle.

The bill seeks to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions" that Islam and the Islamic world have made. It does not call for any spending or organized celebration of Islam Day.

"We are a state of tolerance. We understand that people have different beliefs," said Sen. Will Espero, a Democrat. "We may not all agree on every single item and issue out there, but to say and highlight the negativity of the Islamic people is an insult to the majority" of believers "who are good law-abiding citizens of the world."

But Republican Sen. Sam Slom argued that the United States has become too sympathetic toward Islamic extremists.

"I don't think there's any country in the history of the world that has been more tolerant than the United States of America, and because of that tolerance, we've looked the other way a lot of times, and many thousands of our citizens have been killed by terrorists," said Slom, a Republican.

The lone Democrat voting against the bill opposed it on church-state separation fears.

Do you like this last line?

Everybody catch that this holiday will be in September? Why doesn't the Hawaiian Legislator take a field trip to NYC so they can just piss on the WTC site? Sorry but this makes me want to vomit.

I bet obama would find time to attend that prayer day every year!

Chuck,
Excellent final paragraph -- your commentary, I mean.

Only a few lawmakers objected. Get that? 9/11 is being swept under the rug by the rest -- never mind that nearly 3000 perished on our home soil that day.

At the rate the present Islamophilia is going, accelerated by BHO's "reaching out," I predict that many states will declare an Islam Day. The ummah would see such dhimmitude as proof of Allah's will that Islam should rule the world!

BTW, doesn't Ramadan often come around in the fall season?

Out of the clear blue sky, Hawaii decides to recognize Islam's achievements? WHY? Who pushed this$$$$$$$??

They own us, folks...in ways we can't know. Why else would so much unbelievable stuff be going on?
Did you notice some of the swine flu coverage is now using something like HTUL(whatever the letters are!) Flu, instead of SWINE because muslims were offended?
There are other examples, but I have a headache.

Nothing that the left does surprises me anymore.

DaBlade, he's not tied up with the national prayer day so why not?

AOW, thanks. We'll barely be finished with the 9/11 rememberances when this "holiday" rolls around.

Z, I find it curious also

TS, maybe they'll follow Congress' lead and have a day for pedophiles?

Brooke, it has to be better there

Shoprat, it's getting harder and harder to shock me too

While I may not feel as strongly as you on the subject, I do find it weird for this to occur in September and secondly why it was need at all?

There are hundreds of religions who would love to line up and have their faith's also recognized by a state too.

That's why I really don't like government and religion to mix. Politicians and religion is like a drunk woman and a horny guy, somebody is gonna get screwed.

On the other hand (playing devil's advocate), your story on Islam can easily have the word Christianity in it's place and be written by some people in history who have been beaten, raped, murdered, enslaved, burned and tortured all in the name Christianity.

Christianity was once on a lost path of wrongdoing much the terrorist who do what they do in the name of Islam.

Is Islam evil, or does evil use Islam to justify what it does?

God Bless

Why Sept 24th? Why not really pour salt on the wound and make it 9/11? I absolutely cannot believe it!!

I didn't know the suicide bomb belt or the truck bomb was the pinnacle of achievement. Perhaps for stupid leftists, but not for me, sorry.

Islamophilia, good one Always.

Don't think that the choosing of September was a mistake. While the national media still rants about anyone who tries to show pictures of the 9/11 attacks, calling it inappropriate etc. a state legislative branch can make this vote; absolutely ridiculous.

Where are all the liberals screaming for separation of church and state? They whine about anything Christian that makes the headlines (when it does...) they whine when anything Christian happens at all...

I find the month chosen interesting as well as the state taking the first movement toward this.

Chuck,
I ranted about this on yesterday's radio show on BTR. Mentioned your URL too!

It's all proof the Jesus is coming back soon, and that means it's gonna get a lot worse before it gets better, a lot.

You know I cannot help but think this sets a dangerous precedent. After all, there are only 365 days in the year. We cannot give EVERYBODY a holiday...and that is where we are going.

Furthermore, if Hawaii is so down with Islam and the fact that POTUS grew up in Hawaii, it makes perfect sense that Hawaii adopt the terrorists imprisoned at Gitmo.

Sorry I am so far behind. The kids are still in track and while I would never do this instead of going to a meet, it keeps me behind

Flavor, you make some good points and yes Christianity does have a past but this is dealing with the present.

Your comment actually brings up another, more relevant point in that there is a seperation of church and state issue here that the left loves to rattle on about. Interesting that they were able to overcome their aversion to mixing religion and politics long enough to support this.

Gramma, too obvious

MK, they are innovators

Leslie, good comment. I thought of the church-state issue when I read Flavor's post, hadn't connected that at the time of writing

AOW, thanks a lot for the mention, always appreciated. I don't get to listen because my connection is not the greatest. I live in the sticks and the best I can get is through my cell. Not bad but bnot good enough for streaming or longer videos.

Caladan, thanks and welcome back, haven't seen you in awhile

Puma, welcome and thanks for stopping by. Not a bad idea, trade one island for another.
