We Have Now Legalized Racial Harassment At The Polls

I'm sure we all remember this from the 2008 Presidential election.

EXCLUSIVE: Career lawyers overruled on voting case

Justice Department political appointees overruled career lawyers and ended a civil complaint accusing three members of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense of wielding a nightstick and intimidating voters at a Philadelphia polling place last Election Day, according to documents and interviews.

The incident - which gained national attention when it was captured on videotape and distributed on YouTube - had prompted the government to sue the men, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring would-be voters with the weapon, racial slurs and military-style uniforms.

Career lawyers pursued the case for months, including obtaining an affidavit from a prominent 1960s civil rights activist who witnessed the confrontation and described it as "the most blatant form of voter intimidation" that he had seen, even during the voting rights crisis in Mississippi a half-century ago.

The lawyers also had ascertained that one of the three men had gained access to the polling place by securing a credential as a Democratic poll watcher, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The Washington Times.

The career Justice lawyers were on the verge of securing sanctions against the men earlier this month when their superiors ordered them to reverse course, according to interviews and documents. The court had already entered a default judgment against the men on April 20.

We have a civil rights activist from the 60's saying this is more blatant than Mississippi 50 years ago, can you think of a more powerful statement?

Anybody remember the whining from the Dems about disenfranchising voters in the 2000 and 2004 elections? Never any actual incidences or proof, just accusations.

Now this?

Pure and simple you have to call this what it is, legalized racism. Anyone think we will see this again? This group has 27 chapters nationwide, think they will hesitate to pull this shit in your town next?

It won't last, Chuck. The sad part is that if the DOJ would have prosecuted, this would have been over. Now what will happen the next election if the black panther party stands outside? There will no doubt be people watching them on the other side. That is exactly what could have been avoided, but this president is out for revenge against anything traditional in this country.

By the way, Chuck; great site you have here. I am linking you.

Keep it up dude!!

Actually, I think it will be more prevalent in coming elections, combined with the shadow of intimidation currently being formed through ACORN, the blue shirts, the unions, and so on...

The people who are perpetuating these things are emboldened. And why? Because of things like this very story...there are no consequences, no follow through, no boundaries anymore...

It is just like disciplining a child, if you have rules yet never keep them; if you have boundaries yet always let them cross them without consequences to their actions; if there is no sting in the discipline...they will not act right, do right, or live right.

Bluepitbull, I can tell you this type of thing won't work where I'm at. Thanks for the link, I'll add you to my blogroll

Leslie, you put it quite well. They will be emboldened next election. Same as ACORN. We have validated the behavior of both groups.

Back in 2004 I saw a debate on Fox between two highly placed executives of the DNC and RNC. The DNC rep kept saying they wanted every vote counted. The GOP rep kept asking him "You mean every legal vote right?". No matter how many times he said it, the DNC rep wouldn't bite, he kept saying every vote. For me, nothing has made it clearer on what the intent of the DNC is. This explains their refusal to disavow ACORN, their fight to the death against voter ID, and now their legalization of racism at the polls.

BHO's black-supremacist agenda? Sounds like it to me.

Some are now officially more equal. It's always been the case with the left, but now it's taking on a whole new level.

That was pre-tea party. In the post-tea party world, there batons would become a very uncomfortable and unplanned stool.

This country is going down a very scary path...

What tactics will people be allowed to pursue to ensure their candidate wins? Are we going to resemble the past corruption in Iraq, and current corruption in Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela? Is it soon going to be allowable to put "dissenters" in prison, or kill them???

AOW, I'm getting a little worried

MK, agreed

DaBlade, heh heh

MA, it will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Two things from the one left leaning person.

I want to know why the one Black Panther (the tall one) was there as a poll watcher anyway. Who the hell has a Black Panther as a poll watcher?

Second, I definitely want an answer from the DOJ on what reason if any they would have in dropping this case. How can you explain doing this? Who made the call to do this?

Me being a minority especially knows the effectiveness of intimidation. Growing up in my life I experienced it several times.

I stand for equal justice for all regardless of who you are, and right now I am not seeing it in this case.

I never am quick to throw race into anything. We minorities are often guilty of that and it often becomes a cry wolf syndrome, so for now I won't do that.

Flavor, thanks. Good points.

Truth is the election officials in philly set the stage for this. One clip I saw, the Fox reporter was being harassed by a poll official while they were letting the man with a weapon intimidater people.

As far as why the charges were dropped, sorry but this is what Obama has been doing in excess, using the government to get his way. You can't tell me you haven't noticed that while ACORN flaunted election law last year, there has been no move to investigate them?
