"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right,"..."When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.'"
Soon-to-be-former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
This comment spoke volumes on so many levels.
It shows the idiocy and sheer panic of Harry Reid.
It shows the hypocrisy of the left - the opposition to slavery was from the Democratic party, the Republicans freed the slaves in the form of Abraham Lincoln.
He then compounded the idiocy with this:
"When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."
He appeared to be referencing filibusters by Strom Thurmond in 1957, when he was a Democrat. To make this statement even more idiotic, 80% of the lawmakers opposing civil rights were Democrats.
As to hypocrisy, it also shows the willingness of the left (the party determined to stomp out racism wherever it is) to use racist statements whenever they suit their cause.
Finally it is further indictment of the media in this country that a member of the Senate feels comfortable enough making a statement as idiotic as this without any repercussions for the inaccuracy of the statement.
