Enjoy Your Trip Down The River Tom?

While Oil Slick Spread, Interior Department Chief of Staff Rafted with Wife on "Work-Focused" Trip in Grand Canyon

Though his agency was charged with coordinating the federal response to the major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Department of the Interior chief of staff Tom Strickland was in the Grand Canyon with his wife last week participating in activities that included white-water rafting, ABC News has learned.

Other leaders of the Interior Department were focused on the Gulf, joined by other agencies and literally thousands of other employees. But Strickland’s participation in a trip that administration officials insisted was “work-focused” raised eyebrows among other Obama administration officials and even within even his own department, sources told ABC News.

Strickland, who also serves as Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, was in the Grand Canyon with his wife Beth for a total of three days, including one day of rafting. Beth Strickland paid her own way, Obama administration officials said.

The Stricklands departed for the Grand Canyon three days after the leaks in the Deepwater Horizon pipeline were discovered. Ultimately, after the government realized that the spill was worse than had been previously thought, officials decided that Strickland was needed in the Gulf so Strickland was taken out of the Grand Canyon by a National Park Service helicopter.

One government official, asking for anonymity because of the political sensitivities involved, told ABC News that some Interior Department employees thought it was “irresponsible” for Strickland to have gone on the trip, given the crisis in the Gulf, which was fully apparent at the time he departed for the Grand Canyon.

When asked about Strickland’s trip, Interior Department press secretary Kendra Barkoff told ABC News that “the federal government has been all over this issue from day one in a unified coordinated response.”

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Sure, it's a "unified coordinated response". At least with the staff that could be bothered to address the issue.

I will give credit to ABC for airing this. With that said though, think you'd be hearing more about this if it were Brownie white water rafting with his wife during Katrina?

"Beth Strickland paid her own way, Obama administration officials said."

Not that we don't trust you or anything, but can some proof be supplied.

And how come zero took 12 days to turn up.

Amazing. This administration is filled with entitled people who literally think they are ROYALTY.

And the MSM is their court. No wonder we are hearing crickets.

WOW, what a story...I hadn't heard this.

I did hear someone mention that the person in charge of problems like that in Time Square (in the WH) last week stayed on vacation, did you?

MK, he "RUSHED" there, as our media put it!! RUSHED! Bush was there 2 days later and got SUCH grief for having lagged... (@#**($&*(&#

"work-focused trip"?

That means he went on vacation at taxpayers' expense. Either that or he paid his own expenses and will write them off his taxes.

Whichever one it is, you and I will end up paying for his family vacation.

MK, we just trust them

Brooke, agreed. We have set up a ruling class

Z, dead on about Bush. Obama wasn't even going to the Gulf until Fox started harassing him

PCC, come on - you know he doesn't pay taxes

Heckuva job Stricky, heckuva job.

I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding... he was comparing water sources and developing crisis solving skills dealing with oil spills and such. Beth was his on site environmental statistic researcher...

*Cheeky smile

The only surprise here is that the drive-by media actually aired the story.

Being a Democrat means never having to answer a tough question.

The only thing the Feds have been all over since day one in this situation is BP, trying to tell the experts there how to do their job when none of them have ever set foot on a drilling rig than perhaps for a photo-op. You know , like the one Obummer did this past week.

Nice opportunity but where was he in response to the flooding in Middle Tennessee? Oh, yea that's right, overseeing the capping of the oil spill, as if the dang fool knows one thing about oil rigs or drilling.
But then you haven't heard the folks in Nashville screaming for the "gubermint" to furnish them free housing in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta etc etc. Nor have you seen rioting, looting and general mayhem in Nashville and middle TN. No Sharpton's, No Jacksons, No Democrats screaming, WHERE FEMA AND CLEAN UP CREWS.
No billions set aside for recovery but then Tennessee didn't vote for OBUMMER did they.

Chuck said...

Ticker, be fair - he can only ignore so many disasters at once. When he is done ignoring the Gulf he'll get around to doing nothing about Tennessee

Good point also about Sharpton and friends, Nashville is 27% black. Where's the accusations that Obama is trying to kill black folks?

I guess all the cell phones in Tennessee got washed away, and the oil ruined television reception in the Gulf. But right now Nobama's busy appointing a new Supreme Court judge. He'll get around to paying lip service to the flood victims when he gets time.
