Why I Think The Left Hurt Themselves

First, I have to give at least a bit of a hat tip to fellow blogger and friend LA Sunsett at Political Yen/Yang. I was reading his post on Sheriff Dupnik of Arizona when I began formulating this post in my head. Stop by and read his take on the sheriff, it's a good read.

The left has a problem with their dialogue after the shooting in Arizona, the truth. This is not a new problem, they have a chronic problem with the truth.

The reason this time is different is that this story has legs.

In the past the left, along with a national media that is complicit in pushing the story to further their own liberal agenda, has had a specific formula it has used.

Make a claim against the right, one that is at best weak, more often completely baseless.

Repeat it enough times that it starts to become "truth".

Establish a united front. It is very common to see a large contingent of politicians, consultants, media talking heads, and spokespersons echo the same story. The media then follows with all outlets joining in on the story to one extent or another. CBS, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CNN, AP, Reuters, Yahoo, etc will all fall in line and hammer away at the same speaking points until they reach the point in which the public begins believing it.

The final step, and this is the important one, is that they then quickly move onto something else before the public can examine the story and get to the truth.

This final step is one of two places where I believe that they screwed up this time.

By now anyone reading this post knows how much of an ass most on the left, and their complicit media whores, have been making of themselves over the horrific shootings in Tucson, Arizona. Further, anyone reading this knows that their message has been largely debunked. Primarily because it has been shown that the shooter was not particularly politically motivated but instead a complete and total whackjob.

Up to this point the plan was going fairly well. They were making baseless claims against the right. They were repeating it enough times and with enough people that it should take hold. They picked the perfect targets, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, all of the usual boogeymen that are feared and reviled far and wide by the public at large.

They of course were lying but then, that wasn't new territory for them. Most of their attacks against the right in the past were, at the very least, slightly exaggerated.

Then all of a sudden, things are not going quite as planned.

First, the public wasn't really buying it this time.

Two polls, one in the first couple of days after the shooting, the other three days after, showed the public not entirely on board.

If you look at both of these polls, they are not even selling this to their own people. While Democrats lean towards buying it, they are doing so in anemic numbers.

Now to the biggest mistake, the final step from above. As I said above, the left has counted on their (false) stories going away.

This story isn't going to fall off of the radar any time soon. This is a story that will be discussed for weeks, plenty of time for the public to realize what has really happened here.

It may be wishful thinking on my part but we may finally have a situation in which the public will get to see the left for what is, an opportunistic, hateful, American-hating group of people who have only two goals; squashing political dissent (and the exercise of freedom of speech) and to exploit any tragedy for political gain.

First, thanks for the plug.

Secondly, you would think that seeing how the race card strategy played out would at least be an indicator to some of them. Not all, but some. At least enough that someone would have the guts to tell the others in their tent that this might not be a good idea, and may even backfire.

But...I guess not.

It's such a crock. These media outlets should be dead. Why anyone listens to them and respects them I have no idea. Some veneration of the academics, I suppose.

On the subject of the leftist, non-law abiding sheriff, take a gander at this from over at Texas Freds Blog:

LA, the race card strategy, blame Bush strategy, blame Palin strategy, seems as if what they really need is a new strategy person.

Tony, welcome. They are on life support

Ticker, I went, I saw. I thought from the beginning that this dude was yelling a little too loud. It's an old leftist trick, diversion. Get out in front and attack the right so that when you get caught it is obvious they are just trying to get back at you.

Yesterday, the WaPo ran a front page story on Loughner. I have the print edition in my hand. Note the following quotation from the front page of the print edition of the WaPo:

A picture of Loughner gleaned from interviews with more than two dozen friends, classmates, teachers and neighbors, as well as from his own writing in online forums, shows no evidence that politics or government were among his defining or enduring obsessions. Rather, his deepest, most disturbing questions were about the very nature of reality: He appeared to have lost any clear sense of the line between real life and dreams or fantasy.

I do want to emphasize that the above appeared ON THE FRONT PAGE.

The article can be found HERE, and I'm about to post the excerpt at my web site, too.

AOW, at the other end of the country posters attack ing Palin are showing up on the streets of San Francisco. This is the explanation for the posters by the SF NBC affiliate

Granted, Palin has brought even more spotlight on herself with a recent diatribe against "irresponsible journalists.

Let's hope so, either way we must remind the public of this, over and over and over. Use the left's own tactics against them.
