What Do You Think About This?

Astronaut Mark Kelly, husband of Rep Gabrielle Giffords has decided to resume training for his flight on the space shuttle Endeavour.

Read the article here.

What do you think about this? I have my thoughts but I am curious as to what others think. Is this being selfish? Is he putting his career ahead of his wife? Is this what you would think she wants? Is there a duty for the commander of the mission that supersedes family?

I think it all depends on what she wanted him to do. She may have given him the go ahead and that part is not being reported.

I don't think we can judge, we don't know all the facts. So many times, the press leaves out an important, even if minor, detail in their reporting. Really, this is between him and her, period. If something is really out of kelter about this, it'll come out in time, and he'll pay the price. Just ask John Edwards.

I was wondering about this when I read about his decision. I would have to say that it isn't anyone's business to judge. We don't know the dynamics of any conversations he and his wife may have had on the subject.

I wonder if this is the kind of thing the public should be spending their time worrying about. Regardless what he decides to do, is it anyone's place to judge him on it?

I really don't have an opinion on this; it is a decision for Captain Kelly and his wife.

LA, agreed

Alligator, agree on the press - not sure how it compares to Edwards

Hayden, I agree on both points

I kind of go where everyone else does. First we do not know all of the circumstances (like how she is doing). We don't know what they have talked about now or before. Mostly, it's a personal decision that he has to make and live with.

I think it's the right thing to do because my suspicion is she would want him to go like most supporting wives.

Just curious what everyone else's take was.

Perhaps I expressed myself clumsily. Meaning if Captain Kelly is doing something his wife doesn't approve of (e.g. he's selfish in this decision) it will come back and bite him on the rear. Essentially, John Edwards was a selfish man and it caught up with him.

My analogy probably still sucks.

In one interview I believe the Captain alluded to the fact that he and his wife had discussed this situation.

It's a tough decision to make when one has a loved one who is suffering or ill. No one can judge until they have walked that same road. Been there done that.

I agree with Ticker. I saw that interview. It is a matter best left to Capt Kelly and his family...None of our business.

I really have no say on this sort of this, it's a decision between the two of them. Good luck to both of them.

Alligator, thanks - I can be a little slow too (at least my wife says so)

Ticker, I very much agree

Phil, it is fascinating that this is all public

If I were the astronaut and Mr. AOW getting post-stroke treatment, Mr. AOW would want me to go ahead. Mr. AOW, post-stroke, does insist that I pursue my career and certain social activities.

However, the risks involved for me the astronaut might cause me to stay on the ground.
