Yet Another Successful Leftist City

Report: Nearly Half Of Detroiters Can’t Read

Anyone else think it's not a coincidence that every city ran by the left is an abject failure full of illiterate, fatherless, high school dropouts?

They are in good company though:

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Fairfax County Public Schools, often touted as one of the best education systems in the nation, has actually graduated many who cannot read. My friend Leonard is one of them; he graduated from high school some 20 years ago. The system just kept passing him on instead of teaching him.

Leonard is not stupid, but because he is black, the teachers were pressured not to retain him in the early grades so that he could learn to read.

Very sad situation made worse by a peverse cultural indifference to learning.

I went to public school in Manhattan - also a liberal hot spot. My second grade class (minus a couple of children) was double promoted to fourth grade. Our SRA (reading) scores were so high, that our teachers had to go to the public library to get books for us because we were way beyond the elementary school level reading in our school library.

Of course, we didn't have an aversion to education. We were very keen on soaking up as much learning as possible. That can't be said of many kids today.

The situation described by AOW is prevalent in the Rio Grande Valley, too. School officials pass along many students who cannot read. I took this problem to our Dean once; he told me, "They can't read in Spanish, either. What's your point?"

I have written myself into a state exhaustion enumerating all the ills with our education system. Either it is a matter that no one cares, or too many citizens are too easily fooled. I have heard Michelle Rhee touted as a true reformer —but she too is a fraud. She’s adopted that ridiculous “children first” mantra, but she is all about defrauding school districts for a nice chunk of their “in service” training budget.

No, it is not a mere coincidence. Politicians have long known that stupid people are easy to manipulate —it benefits politicians to keep people as stupid as possible.

What's sad is that i'm certain that most of the people living there will have no clue why they are in their current predicament.

" benefits politicians to keep people as stupid as possible."

Exactly right Mustang.

AOW, a lot of inner city kids get passed along so that they are not a bother. I grew up in the north end of Flint, Michigan and kids there would come to school drunk. If hey were leaving the teacher alone they were left alone.

Cube, the problem is that a lot of the parents are single parents trying to raise kids on their own. They do not have the culture of learning to instill in their children

Mustang, I think this is why inner city schools are not improved - people would become educated and not need the politicians that run the cities

MK, yes they do know - it is societies fault that they are in the position they are in. They're entitled to a diploma.
