What Do You Think About This?

Ugly? You May Have a Case

Dr Daniel S. Hamermesh, professor of economics, University of Texas, Austin has written an article in the New York Times proposing the notion that ugly people should get protection under the law the same as race, gender, etc.

What are your thoughts?

I may have a bit of a different take on this, I was just wondering how everyone else saw it.

Chuck - Professor Hamermesh addresses a subject here that has always been of interest to me.

There are beautiful people who are truly beautiful people, and there are beautiful people who are ugly inside.

Then of course you have ugly people who are just plain ugly - inside and out, and people who are definitely plain but beautiful inside.

'Pretty is as pretty does' is true, and certainly an ugly person or a beautiful person can work on being just that, even though we have to live with what we are given, and of course even our looks have been given to us for a pupose.(I am not a believer in face alteration.)

But as to whether the government should get involved with this my thought is no. Let us handle this issue on a personal level, allowing each to find out for him or herself just where real beauty lies.

Another waste of time and resources. I totally agree with Sue. Everything cannot be legislated. It is time to stop with the controls.
I have to say I am sorry I missed knowing about your Grandma. I am sorry to hear your family had to deal with this. I kind of dropped away from reading blogs for a while. Dealing with my own impending loss. My beautiful daughter has Cancer again. Dr. said he can keep her comfortable, but that is all.
Am trying to get back into the groove, reading and commenting again. Do not know when I will return to my political blog, but am trying to keep up on my fluff blog. Will be back:) Keep up the good work.

Government schools are always talking about "self-esteem" Political correctness is always concerned about "offending" people because it will damage their self-esteem.

Now all of a sudden the government wants to categorize people on how they look? Can you imagine the stigma and damage to self-esteem if the government declares you are "ugly'?

It's time for the theme song from Looney Tunes cartoons.

I wonder how ugly people have been getting along without govt help til now...This guy is a university professor, probably spouting this garbage to his students.

I look at this and think, is this any more absurd than protections for homosexuals? Short (or tall people)? The obese? If we are going to "protect" all of these people, why shouldn't the ugly get their due?

Sue, good points. What does ugly even mean? My second thought (right after 'this is idiotic') is how on earth would we set standards for this?

Gramma, thank you, she was a great lady. As to your daughter I am sorry to hear that. Blogging is definitely not a priority right now. Any time lost with your daughter is time you will not get back. Hang in there. Strength to both of you.

LA, I am right there beside you my friend

Alligator, who will step forward and say they are ugly? I love the Looney Tunes theme.

Phil, indoctrination

Oh, good lawrd.

So, can I show up to a gov't center with no makeup and ill-fitting clothes and get some free bennies? Maybe I could stay up all night so I can look haggard. Think that would help? ;)

An aside; I think plastic surgery is OK to correct scarring or deformity, such as a post-mastectomy patient or someone who gets their nose plastered across the side of their face.

I'd like to know who decides who's ugly and who isn't. some CZAR??

We do.

Brooke, maybe I'll stop shaving

Z, it's the Obama administration. You know, liberals. Maybe you need to look like Janeane Garofalo or something?

Alligator said...

Ha! Janeane Garofalo would probably be named "Ugly Czar" by Obama and just think who she would persecute to make herself feel good about herself.

Am I the only person here that likes
Janeane Garofalo?

She was awesome in Reality Bites.

Would Obama allow Moochele to be on the list?

Sorry no special protection. Special protection for gays, muslims etc is what got us to this point in the first place. Now we have various groups all treated differently to some degree under the law. It's stupid and undermines society in the long run.

Chuck said...

Alligator, that is beautiful on the left

Sue, I suspect so

Ticker, she may be entitled to compensation

MK, yeah - we can only discriminate against Christians now
